Winning Ugly

GRIMSBY beat bogey side Nuneaton at the fourth attempt on Saturday and in doing so lifted the Mariners back into a play-off spot. Town got off to a great start on 8 minutes when Thomas delivered a great cross which Rodman volleyed in to put Town 1-0 up. Grimsby effectively defended that goal for the almost 90 minutes of the playing time that was to remain.

Nuneaton dominated the remaining 45 minutes of the first half, but Town defended well and their only chance came when McKeown kept Grimsby's intact with a good save to deny Hibbert.

Early in the second half Bignott got a bad knock to his angle, and was eventually replaced by McDonald.

McKeown made another good save to deny Hibbert after a good attacking spell by Nuneaton. York then had a good chance but put it wide from a good position.

Nuneaton continued to have all the possession and Brown put a good chance over with his head with 5 minutes to go.

Grimsby clung on for a nervy win to record a valuable 3 points. It was not a classic display but it sets Town up nicely to face Luton on Tuesday night where they will be in the position of underdogs, something they haven't had for a while, but when they Town have generally done well.

Nuneaton: Belshaw, Magri, Dean, Cowan, Streete, York, Trainer, Walker, Sleath, Brown, Hibbert

Subs: Adams, Moult, Gordon, Taylor, Pearson

Grimsby: McKeown, Bignot, Pearson, Boyce, Thomas, Disley, Kerr, Rodman, Neilson, John-Lewis, Jennings

Subs: Cook, McDonald, Hannah, Thanoj, Tounkara

Referee: Chris Kavanagh (Lancashire)
