Forest Chumps

GRIMSBY gifted Forest Green two goals, one in each half, which proved decisive as Forest Green won 2-1. Just before the home side's second goal Town sub Ross Hannah missed a golden chance which would have put Grimsby in front with only a few minutes to go.

To make matters worse all the teams above the Mariners won, increasing the pressure on Town to win both of their next two games against Barnet and Bristol Rovers, the top two clubs.

The Mariners were unchanged for the visit to Nailsworth in deepest Gloucestershire. Town's defence looked uncharacteristically shakey on occasions in a first half of few chances, and Forest Green took advantage on the third time that someone slipped or misplaced the ball. A mistake by Toto allowed the ball to be pulled back. Magnay had a chance to clear it but it went straight to Frear and bounced in off him.

In the second half neither side looked like breaking the deadlock until Ross Hannah came on for Palmer. Hannah had a turn and shot in the box that forced a good save from the 'keeper. Then, in the best chance, Hannah was through with just the keeper to beat. His first shot was initially saved but fell back to the Town striker with the 'keeper on the floor. Hannah tried to control the ball, but failed to get a decent shot on goal and the chance was gone.

Play went up the other end amd Disley presented the ball to Norwood on the edge of the box and gifted Forest Green a chance.

Town failed to muster a decent chance in the remainder of the game.

It was a disappointing end to a poor match that deserved to be a draw but Grimsby will have to lick their wounds and keep trying to ratchet up the points total and keep the season alive.
