One Goal Enough to Beat Braintree

ONE moment of brilliance resulted in the game's only goal against Braintree, but the Mariners notched up a third consecutive win to move them up into third place with ten games to go. Craig Disley's header and the cross that led to it was one of the few highlights of a dull game.
Paul Hurst made just one change from the midweek victory over Telford, preferring Jon-Paul Pittman rather than Christian Jolley to partner John-Lewis up front.
Braintree almost scored in a mass scramble at the start of the game. They had several chances to score then David blasted it well over.
Town's defence though soon settled down after that scare and shut up shop, but the Mariners struggled to break down a determined opposition.
Just as against Telford on Tuesday the breakthrough came straight after the break. A surging run by right back Carl Magnay led to a perfect cross to Disley who had made a trademark late run from midfield, and Town's skipper flicked the ball into the net with his head.
In a repeat of Tuesday's game very little happened after the goal early in the second half and the only notable incident came when Braintree midfielder Chez Isaac was sent off four minutes from time for a second bookable offence.
Town have struggled against two mediocre teams this week and their next challenge sees them travel down south again to take on Woking, who should offer a stiffer challenge than either Telford or Braintree. Let's hope for a repeat of the performance against Barnet.
