Town Implode at Chester

GRIMSBY threw away a two goal lead which ended their winning streak and meant the failed to take the opportunity to gain ground on the teams above them. The turning point of the game was a second half substitute by Paul Hurst when he made a defensive substitution.

The change was intended to help protect Town's lead but it unsettled the rhythm of the team and gave Chester the initiative. The home side seized the opportunity and scored two quick goals and could even have won the game in the dying minutes of the game

Town started with an unchanged side, and John-Lewis was not even on the bench, following his omission from the side for paternity leave, his inclusion being prevented this time by a foot injury.

Grimsby took the lead in a move involving some great interplay between Arnold and Pittman, which Palmer finished off to make the score 1-0 to Grimsby.

Pittman then broke throw clear and seemed to have got the ball over the line but Worsnop managed to get a hand to the ball to deny Town a second.

After the break Town scored the much needed second when Arnold's powerful shot was saved, his second attempt was pushed onto the post but Pittman reacted first to tap in the rebound to give Grimsby some breathing space.

Town brought on Parslow for a Pittman to strengthen the defence and Chester almost immediately pulled a goal back through Heneghan.

Robertson then pressed the self destruct button and stuck his leg out to bring down Hughes. Rooney took the penalty and scored.

Jolley then came on and Pittman's cross to him should have resulted in a Town winner but the 'keeper saved Jolley's effort.

Both sides had late chances to win but neither took them. The substitution changed everything as Chester came back to claim a point in a match which Grimsby had totally dominated.
