Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Amond: Debut Goal
Amond: Debut Goal

Kidderminster Spoil the Party

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/08/2015

GRIMSBY succumbed to a sucker punch late goal at Kidderminster to draw a game which they should have won. The Mariners led 1-0 and 2-1 only to concede a sickening 93rd minute equaliser. The result overshadowed a solid performance with debut goals from Amond and Monkhouse.

Town created the bulk of their chances in the first half. Arnold was played through who just the 'keeper to beat but he overhit the ball and chose to fall in the box rather than try and reach the ball.

Probably Town's best chance came when Bogle played Arnold through, and his two yard cross to Amond was somehow intercepted by a Kidderminster defender and edged towards their 'keeper. Arnold probably should have shot.

Monkhouse then played Arnold in, in another one on one but he didn't manage to get his shot round the 'keeper

Town finally broke the deadlock just before half time. The ball played through to Amond who was adjudged onside and he raced through to slot the ball past the 'keeper, as Arnold should have done in the last good chance.

Town were coasting at this stage until a chance came to Kidderminster out of nothing. A wayward East backpass was chest high and startled McKeown, who palmed the ball into the path of Styche, who couldn't fail to score. Neither player was blameless and luck didn't favour Town either as the ball ended up in the worst possible location right at the feet of Styche.

It was a freak goal but Town soon made up for it when an Arnold corner was headed back into the path of Monkhouse to make the score 2-1 thanks to another debut goal.

The goal came 30 minutes from the end and Grimsby understandably began to start to defend the lead they had. In the main they restricted Kidderminster to long shots and the home side didn't really threaten Grimsby at all. The only chance of any note came in the 93rd minute when Hodgkiss looped a hopeful ball into the box and substitute Reid headed it into corner of net.

It was harsh on Town, who had done enough to win the game and scored two goals, but Kidderminster should never have scored two goals from the few decent attacks they managed to muster. Last year the defence usually did their job and Town cold usually point to missed chances. At Kidderminster Town's defence let them down if anything.

The game was notable for over 1500 travelling Town fans. If these support levels are maintained Town are going to create some great atmospheres across the land which hopefully will inspire the team to great things.
