Town Record Record Win

GRIMSBY make a mockery of Southport's "bogey" status with Town's biggest ever win at Haig Avenue and their first clean sheet there since 1973. The Mariners raced into a 3-0 lead in the first 35 minutes, added a second early in the second half, then got a clean sheet for another boost, running out 4-0 winners.
In truth though before Grimsby scored they had been struggling to create anything in the game. But once Town got their noses in front they did the professional thing and won in the end with some ease.
Paul Hurst brought Shaun Pearson in place of Toto Nsiala in defence and leading scorer Omar Bogle was surprisingly overlooked in favour of Pittman up front.
After a struggling start by Town the Mariners took the lead when a free kick was cleared and the ball fell nicely to Clay on the edge of the box and the midfielder blasted it past the 'keeper into the top corner.
McKeown then kept Town in the lead with a point-blank save to deny the home side after a goalmouth scramble.
Disley then put Town two in front with their second attempt on goal, heading the ball in the net from a cross when left unmarked at the far post after a mini-spell of pressure from the away side.
Pittman rewarded Paul Hurst's faith in him when he headed a third home just after the half hour mark, nodding Robinson's cross into the bottom corner.
Grimsby carried on where they left off in the second half when Gowling headed in a fourth from Pearson's cross after a free kick.
Town should have scored more in the second half but didn't add to the tally. Gary Jones was sent off in injury time to complete a miserable day for Southport.
It was a ruthless win for Town who coasted most of the game in second gear.
