GRIMSBY will be involved in a new format FL trophy in 2016/2017, the Football League have announced. The one season trial will see 16 Premier League academy and Under-21 sides join the 48 League 1 and League 2 sides in a revamped competition.
The competition, formally known as the JPT, will see 16 regional groups of 4 sides, with the two teams progressing to a knockout stage.
The format is controversial as many supporters see it as the first step towards "B" sides being allowed into the Football League.
However the format is just for one year so fans have the chance to vote with their feet and not attend the games.
