Walsall v Grimsby Team News
By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 30/08/2016
GRIMSBY face Walsall tonight in the revamped Checkatrade Trophy. Both sides are expected to rest some first team players, although the rules of the competition prevent managers from making wholescale changes.
Some supporters will be boycotting the event due to the presence of academy sides in the tournament this year. Town face Leicester U-23 side in their group, as well as Sheffield United. The effect on the gate, in what is already a poorly supported tournament, remains to be seen.
The competition is controversial because some see it as the face step towards the introduction of Premier League "B" teams in the Football League. The theory behind having the academy sides in the competition is that it will benefit potential future England footballers to play completive football at an earlier stage in their careers, although there is no evidence that this would make any difference to the national side.
