GRIMSBY'S defeat in the EFL Trophy to Leicester Under-23s last night effectively means the Mariners are out of the competition. However a "dead rubber" game against Sheffield Utd still has to be played to complete the group matches, even though neither side can qualify.

'Keeper James McKeown was sent-off after 17 minutes, although fortunately his suspension only applies to the EFL Trophy which means McKeown will miss the meaningless Sheff Utd tie.

Town lost the tie 1-0, a creditable result with ten men, although just 609 people turned up to watch the match, with many fans choosing to boycott the unpopular competition which this year has controversially admitted academy teams from the higher division.

Grimsby have lost every cup tie this season, although they have all been againat teams from higher divisions.
