Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Town in Shock Win!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/09/2017

FEW people expected Grimsby to return home from Accrington with all three points. Stanley were second in the league and had a 100% record at home, while Town had just been thumped 4-1 at Mansfield.

However goals from Sam Jones and Martyn Woolford either side of half time was enough for Town to grab a valuable three points to lift them away from the danger zone.

Russell Slade made four changes from the Mansfield side where Town had been poor. Ben Davies was a forced change at right back for the injured Zak Mills but Danny Collins, Sam Jones and Jamille Matt were all tactical changes.

Town threatened early on with Siriki Dembele prominent and the young winger forced a good save from Stanley keeper Aaron Chapman. Accrington had a header cleared off the line, but it was Sam Jones who broke the deadlock just before half time with a superb chip over 'keeper Chapman before racing past him for a tap-in on the line.

Stanley equalised almost immediately when Jordan Clark picked out ex-Mariner Kayden Jackson who drilled the ball past McKeown.

Substitute Mallik Wilks and forced James McKeown into a good save with his legs. However, Town went down the other end of the ground and Jones set up Woolford who curled the ball past the 'keeper with a d deft touch.

Town had to survive a few scares but Matt went very close to adding a third, and the Mariners held on for what was an important win. Confidence had dipped following the Mansfield debacle, but Grimsby have shown they are capable of matching the better sides with wins over Crewe and now Accrington either side of that game.
