Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Xmas Without Slade Looms?

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/11/2017

TOWN sunk to a new low after yet another game without a goal. The Mariners have now gone four successive league games without scoring, and four consecutive games at Blundell Park without finding the net. This time Grimsby came away with nothing after the visitors scored through Hill with 20 minutes to go.

Russell Slade made four changes to the starting line-up, mainly enforced. Diallang Jaiyesimi made came in for Martyn Woolford, JJ Hooper replaced Sam Jones, Mitch Rose slotted in for James Berrett, and Zak Mills replaced the suspended Paul Dixon at left back.

Town's performance was at least a bit better and Jaiyesimi set up Scott Vernon who forced an early save from Jack Bonham. Not long afterwards Jaiyesimi struck the crossbar from close range after a sustained spell of Town pressure when they have looked certain to score.

Town continued to dominate and Summerfield went close when his fiercely struck free kick caused the 'keeper to fumble it, but he managed to recover. Bonham then made a stunning save to deny a header from Collins just before the break.

McKeown kept Town in the game early in the second half when he reacted quickly to parry Bennett's shot.

Both sides had chances but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock when the unmarked Hill, in the second phase following a corner, stooped to head in a cross from the centre of the six yard box.

Town threw everything at Carlisle in the closing minutes but were unable to break down the Cumbrians' defences.

The pressure must now be on the board to relieve Russell Slade of his duties. Slade is neither getting the performances not the results from his players, and there seems little prospect that he ever will. Decisive action is needed in time for the next manager to make best use of the January transfer window.
