Town on a High at Barnet

WHAT a difference a week makes. This time last week Grimsby didn't look like they would ever score, never mind win a game. Seven days later the Mariners have acquired an extra 6 points and 5 goals and once again are just three points off the play-offs.
The Mariners dominated the game and would have scored more but for some tremendous saves from the Barnet 'keeper who was their best player. The home side were reduced to ten men in the second half but Grimsby were easily the better side before that point.
Grimsby were unsurprisingly unchanged from the midweek side the beat Swindon. The Mariners got off to the perfect start when Jamille Matt timed his jump perfectly to power in a corner.
A Summerfield free kick was punched away by Stephens, who also made a good save from a Davies free kick. The Barnet 'keeper then made a third save to deny a well-executed volley from Summerfield.
The Mariners should have gone more into the break more than 1-0 up, and the home side were given a mountain to climb when Pascal hacked down the dangerous Dembele just outside the box.
The free kick came to nothing, however Town almost went 2-0 when a Dembele effort was cleared by a defender on the line.
Barnet had a mini spell but Town looked threatening every time they attacked, with the extra space all too apparent. Jones had an overhead kick well saved by Stephens, but the Mariners put the game beyond reach largely due to a tremendous piece of skill by Dembele on the wing who wrong-footed the full back with a tremendous drag back before advancing to the edge of the box and picking out Jones who took a couple of touche and picked his spot.
Soon afterward, a foul by Clough on Summerfield gave Town a free kick. Mills' ball from it was headed away but the Mariners retained possession and worked it back into the box, where an overhead kick from Jones was tipped away for a corner. Jones headed over the bar from the flag-kick.
Rose put the ball in the net from point-blank range, but the 3-0 lead was denied by the linesman's flag for offside, and the midfielder also had a shot charged down in the closing stages.
The Mariners dominated the whole game from beginning to end and thoroughly deserved the win.
