Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Season over?
Season over?

Down the Plughole

GRIMSBY slumped to their lowest moment of their existence since returning to the Football League with their third consecutive defeat. After the 2-0 loss to Morecambe at Blundell Park it looks just a question of when manager Russell Slade will be sacked.

Two first-half goals by Kevin Ellison and Steven Old before the break condemned Grimsby to a demoralising loss, and the abject display failed to hint of any prospect of improvement.

New signing Jake Kean made his debut between the sticks and Martyn Woolford, Mitch Rose, Danny Collins, Jamille Matt, Zak Mills and Sam Jones also returned to the side as Russell Slade looked to return to his first choice players.

Morecambe soon took the lead when a cross was met by the veteran Kevin Ellison whose looping header eluded Keen. Town were restricted to long range efforts as neither side really threatened.

Just before the break though, Kean failed to deal with a corner, and the ball fell straight to Old to nod in from close range.

Town improved after the break and Summerfield and Dembele both had chances, although the visitors too had chances to extend their lead.

Only 3100 watched the game, an attendance which is already inflated by season ticket sales. The Mariners have another home game next week with Newport, and crowds could well dip between 3000 if Slade remains in charge.
