Town Slide Continues

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/01/2018

GRIMSBY crumbled to their fourth successive home defeat in one of their worst runs for years. The Mariners were given every chance when the referee sent Luton's Jordan Cook off in the first half. However, Town failed to score against ten men and then conceded a second-half goal from a free kick in the game's only goal.

Town continued with the 3-5-2 formation which had secured a point at Colchester, but Jamille Matt started alongside Charles Vernam up front, with new signing loan Mallik Wilks surprisingly on the bench. Keeper Ben Killip replaced Jake Kean in goal.

Luke Summerfield hit the bar in early play with a piledriver as Grimsby got off on the front foot. Luton should have scored during a goalmouth scramble but had a shot cleared off the line.

Cook, who had already been showed a card, then made a reckless challenge on Collins and received his marching orders. It was a golden chance for Town to get something against the league leaders.

The Mariners had the better of the remainder of the first half but didn't trouble the Luton 'keeper.

After the break, Luton scored within 3 minutes from a free kick which Killip deflected onto the bar, but Collins was first to the ball to give the Hatters the lead.

Dembele came on to partner Vernam and Matt but the best Town could do was force a save from the Luton keeper from a Nathan Clarke header.

Wilks came on with 15 minutes to go but was unable to make an impression.
