Is football a business or a sport?

Nothing Changes

THE personnel change but the defeats keep coming. The Mariners have now not won for 17 matches without a win, and 2018 has yet to see a Town win. The story at Sincil Bank was much the same at the standard pattern in recent weeks: start well, go close, concede, concede again, fight back, finish.

Town conceded three goals in eight minutes of the first half which virtually condemned them to a defeat on the spot. Town fought back when they were awarded a penalty for hand ball just before half time, but were unable to threaten enough in the second half, and Lincoln cantered home with their 3-1 lead intact.

Michael Jolley brought in Reece Hall-Johnson, Martyn Woolford and Harry Cardwell. Town survived an early scare, but then were unlucky not to score in an early chance that saw them strike the woodwork twice. Cardwell headed a Ben free kick onto the crossbar and then Woolford volleyed the follow-up against the post.

But that was to be Town's best chance before Lincoln raced into a 3 goal lead. Frecklington fired the first through a crowd of players, then a mistake by Nathan Clarke led to Whitehouse crossing for Green to tap in. Wharton put the game beyond reach with the Town defence statuesque.

Town were given hope when Lincoln handled the ball from a corner and Davies gave Grimsby a lifeline from they spot.

The Mariners created nothing of note in the second half, and had McKeown to thank for keeping the score down at the other end.

Town now have Mission Impossible at Coventry next week where even a point would be an unexpected bonus before the season enters the home straight at Easter and the must-win games start to come around.
