Home Sweet Home

GRIMSBY finally picked up their first home win of the season with a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Port Vale at Blundell Park. The Mariners raced into an early lead thanks to a Wes Thomas interception. Town then improved after the break and could have scored more than Hooper's tap-in which sealed the points.
The victory means Town have now picked up six points from two games and gives the Mariners a little bit of breathing space (for now) from the bottom two.
Michael Jolley unsurprisingly stuck to the same XI that won at Carlisle and it paid immediate dividends in the first minute when Mitchell Clark attempted a very ambitious backpass. Wes Thomas had anticipated it however and reached the ball first before rounding the 'keeper and slotting in to give Town a quick lead.
Grimsby failed to really threaten more goals in the first half and Vale probably shaded what chances there were. Tom Pope went closest for the visitors when his volley went just over the crossbar.
After the break Town stepped up a gear and started to play some decent football. Town should have gone 2-0 up when a spell of pressure ended with Thomas cleverly backheeling into the path of Hooper, who hit the post with just the 'keeper to beat.
Hooper though soon had even easier chance from which he made no mistake. Thomas and Vernam play a one-two which split the Vale defence and Vernam picked out the run of Hooper at the far post for a tap-in.
Vale had a few half chances to get back in the game but failed to trouble James McKeown in Town's goal.
It was a good performance and for once Town improved after the break rather than the other way around which has happened several times this season.
The Mariners have a Checkatrade game in midweek but Jolley will once again be able to turn to the players who have managed to wins to try and do the same in the next league game at Mansfield.
