Palmer Comes Back to Haunt Town

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/03/2019

GRIMSBY surrendered a 1-0 lead at Crawley and ended up 2-1 down at the interval. With no goals in the second half, it was a poor performance with Town struggling to create chances all game. Town only really threatened in a spirited last 10 minutes.

Town's nemesis was former loanee Ollie Palmer who scored both Crawley goals.

Michael Jolley brought back the two players who had been missing in the Cambridge defeat. Ludvig Ohman returned at the heart of the three-man defence and Martyn Woolford came into the midfield.

Town started well and took an early lead when a Hendrie free kick from inside his own half was headed down by Ohman to the unmarked Wes Thomas who volleyed in from a central position.

Crawley came back into the game immediately and twice hit the crossbar

Palmer levelled the game midway through the first half when Palmer headed in a good cross from the right, and Crawley looked from then on the most likely winners. Palmer then managed to beat both Davis and McKeown with one touch, firing the ball between McKeown's legs to turn the game around.

McKeown kept Town in the game with some good saves, and there were a couple of goal-line clearances. The best to be said was the Grimsby were still in with a chance of taking a point once the last 20 minutes came along and it was time for substitutions. Cook and Clifton came on, following by Vernon and Grimsby looked more threatening and they came close to scoring in the final stages.

Town though once again lacked creativity and struggled to break down in windy conditions a well-organised defence. With the playoffs a remote prospect, the rest of the season gives a good chance to try something different and think ahead to next season.
