Four Released

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 06/05/2019

TOWN have released four senior players. Defender Danny Collins, midfielder Martyn Woolford and strikers Wes Thomas and JJ Hooper have all been released. Town are also looking to make decisions on our of contract players Harry Davis, Alex Whitmore, Reece Hall-Johnson and Sam Russell.

Loanees Joe Grayson (Blackburn Rovers), Elliot Embleton (Sunderland) and striker Kristian Dennis (Notts County) have all gone back to their clubs, but Michael Jolley has already a squad of 17 senior players under contract for next season, more than any of his predecessors at this stage of the season for some years.

The Mariners have been relatively strong defensively all season, but have been let down at the other end, both in terms of scoring goals and creating chances. Midfielder Elliott Whitehouse missed the whole of this season and will be a player Town fans will be able to see for the first time in the next campaign. Clearly Grimsby will need more new signings, although Michael Jolley has shown his willingness also to promote from within as youth team players have increasingly been involved in recent weeks and several of the 17 senior players have come through the ranks.

Wes Thomas and JJ Hooper had already been excluded from first team games, the former after a disagreement with the manager and the latter has been out on loan. However Collins and Woolford have been involved and both had taken part in over 30 games, so are more suprising departures.
