County No Show

GRIMSBY failed to beat one of the teams below them in the league, Notts County, who are fighting for their lives to avoid becoming the latest big name to fall out of the Football League.

Mackail-Smith and Bird scored two second-half goals which condemned Town to a 22nd league defeat of the season although Alex Whitmore managed a late consolation for Grimsby.

Martyn Woolford and Joe Grayson replaced Sebastian Ring and Kristian Dennis in the starting line-up.

Grimsby started quite well but Notts soon gained the ascendency. James McKeown made a good save to deny O'Brien and then Bird headed a good chance wide of the goal.

After the break County finally broke the deadlock. Former Mariner Mitch Rose deflected cross set up Mackail-Smith for a tap-in at the far post.

County doubled their lead not long after when Bird headed in a Doyle free kick.

Grimsby were left chasing a lost game and Grayson forced Schofield into a save from a free-kick. Substitute write then produced a fingertip save from the County 'keeper.

In the final of six added minutes, Whitmore got on the end of a McKeown free kick to at least get Town's name on the scoresheet.

The Mariners were second best, while County at least got the points they needed to take their relegation fight to the final weekend and rely on Macclesfield dropping points.
