Rub of the Green

GRIMSBY succumbed to their first defeat of the season as at Forest Green, losing by a solitary 75th-minute goal, despite having had the better of the few chances before that.

Forest Green had a lot of possession but struggled to carve out many openings against a resilient Town defence.

New signing Luke Waterfall replaced Ludvig Öhman in defence and Moses Ogbu started in the attack in place of the injured Ahkeem Rose.

Chances were at a premium in a stalemate of a first half. Waterfall had a header which the keeper made a routine save from and Rovers' Dom Bernard fired wide from a good opening.

Forest Green brought on Grubb at the break in place of Stevens and Waterfall had a good chance to score on his debut but poked the ball wide.

Hanson then prodded the ball wide from a good Davis cross.

With 15 minutes to go a defensive clearance fell to Mondal who blasted it in with his left foot to give the hosts the lead.

Hanson had another chance to score for Town but headed wide from Vernon's cross.

The Mariners came close to matching away from home one of the sides tipped for promotion this season but failed to make the most of the few chances that fell to them.
