Town Wield Axe

TOWN have released nine players as they look to cut costs due to the national situation. Jake Hessenthaler, Elliott Whitehouse, Harry Davis, Bradley Garmston, Brandon Buckley, Elliot Grandin, Harry Cardwell, Ahkeem Rose and Jordan Cook have all been told they are no longer required.

The club have thirteen players already on the books with existing contracts. They are James McKeown, Sam Russell, Ollie Battersby, Ludvig Öhman, Luke Waterfall, Mattie Pollock, Luke Hendrie, Elliott Hewitt, Harry Clifton, Jock Curran, James Tilley, James Hanson, Matt Green.

Some other players Town have options to re-sign including Charles Vernam, Billy Clarke and Max Wright.

The EFL are recommending that the season is concluded if necessary, with promotion and relegation being decided on a Points Per Game basis. The league are looking to continue with the play-offs, which would probably be behind doors maybe around July.

This would mean that one club would go down in League Two, either Macclesfield or Stevenage depending on points deductions imposed on Macclesfield.

The league are also proposing a salary cap of around 1.2m. That may leave Grimsby with limited options to enhance the squad. It's likely that most sides will significantly reduce their squad sizes.

Much remains uncertain but realistically Town have a few months to prepare for the resumption of football at Blundell Park.
