Defeat at Southend

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/03/2022

THE Mariners continued their pattern of narrow defeats to the stronger teams in the National League with a 1-0 defeat at Southend last night. Town struggled to create anything and conceded a penalty after the break which resulted in the game's only goal.

Grimsby have lost 1-0 to Southend, Chesterfield, Notts County, Halifax, Wrexham, and 2-0 to Solihull Moors, although they have managed to beat Southend and Notts County by a single (late) goal in other league fixtures.

Last night's game followed a similar pattern. Grimsby defended well in the first half and needed Crocombe to make a couple of saves to keep them in the game

The Mariners had no more than half chances after the break, with McAtee dragging a shot wide and a Waterfall header from a set-piece being comfortably saved.

At the other end, Grimsby restricted Southend to few chances but made a mistake when Efete lunged in on a challenge to concede a penalty which Dalby converted.

Town left it late to make the substitutions which might have salvaged a point and in the end, Southend came closest when they hit the crossbar late on.

The Mariners might have rescued a point at the death from a free kick in the last minute of injury time which fell to Efete but he failed to control the ball and the chance went wide.

Grimsby seem to be able to beat the weaker sides in the division but struggle against the stronger ones, suggesting their league position of 8th is roughly accurate. Their next opponents, Yeovil, represent an opportunity to pick up three points and catch up with the teams above them.
