Grimsby beat Man City U21 on pens

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/11/2022

GRIMSBY beat Man City in the EFL Trophy, winning 4-2 on penalties. The Mariners took an early lead through a Simmonds goal. Man City came into the game, had a huge amount of possession, and equalised through Will Dickson in the first half.

Town limited City to only a handful of chances, despite their huge advantage in possession, and the game went to penalties. Crocombe saved 2 of City's 4 penalties and Town scored all of theirs (Holohan, Clifton, Kiernan and Pearson) to triumph 4-2.

The result means that Grimsby won the group and will play one of the second-placed teams (apart from Mansfield who were in the same group): Morecambe, Tranmere, Wolves U21, Accrington, Barnsley, Barrow or Bradford. The match is guaranteed to be at home as Grimsby are group winners.
