Winning Ways

DAVID Artell recorded a victory in his match at Blundell Park with a 2-1 win over former club Crewe in wet and windy conditions. The Mariners scored 2 early goals and were relatively comfortable under Crewe pulled one back with 12 minutes to go and there were a few tense moments in the closing stages.

However, the Mariners were worthy winners and could have scored more themselves. Town are still unbeaten in the league since former boss Paul Hurst was sacked at the end of October.

David Artell made two changes, bringing in Gnhoua and Eisa for Pyke and Khan. Town started well but Crewe had the first good chance when a looping header from O’Riordan was saved by Cartwright.

Grimsby stepped up a gear and began to look more dangerous. Rose header over from a corner then good play by Hunt led to a chance for Clifton, whose shot was cleared for a corner. Town played the ball straight from the kick to Eisa on the edge of the box who curled it into the top corner.

The goal added to Town's confidence and Glennon in particular played some terrific balls in from the left, creating a chance for Rose. Crewe though looked threatening at times and Billington should have scored following a goalmouth scramble but fired wide.

Grimsby doubled their lead just before half-time with another Glennon assist, a brilliant deep cross picking out Rose at the far post whose downward header gave the keeper no chance.

Crewe had more play as the second half began, but the Mariners looked fairly comfortable and Eisa could have extended Town's lead with a breakaway attack, then a Clifton shot whistled past the post.

The game looked comfortable but a goal for Crewe changed everything. Poor defending saw a Demetriou cross fired in by White at the far post.

Memories of late goals denying Town points earlier in the season must have been in many supporters' minds as the minutes ticked away and Crewe pushed for an equaliser. A blocked shot from O’Riordan was the closest they came though and Grimsby hung on for a deserved win. Glennon, Hunt and Conteh again were the stand-out players.

Grimsby's next game is at Newport a week today and gives them a chance to climb further up the table. The Mariners at yet to experience winning away with the halfway mark of the season approaching.
