Ashcroft on Transfer List

News From 23rd March 2000

Lee Ashcroft Lee Ashcroft has been transfer listed by the club in a shock move just hours before the transfer deadline.

The move comes five days after Alan Buckley vowed he would not buy or sell any players before today's deadline.

The cause of the decision to transfer list Ashcroft is rumoured to be the result of another training ground bust-up with Buckley, although the club deny this officially and say that the decision to place Ashcroft on the market was "purely financial".

Ashcroft was expected to travel on the coach to Charlton last night, albeit unlikely to even feature on the bench, but when the coach left Blundell Park he was mysteriously absent.

In any short statement the club said:

"Obviously we are going to have to strengthen the team and we are exploring all our possibilities".
Alan Buckley added:
"He is a decent player and a marketable commodity. We want to see if there is interest in him."

Ashcroft's view on being placed on the transfer list was:

"I think the club are struggling with finance and need to raise money - I am settled down in Grimsby now. It has been a good season for me.

Just a few weeks ago Ashcroft was a player Alan Buckley appeared to have as the first name on his team sheet, regardless of other options. He is the club's leading scorer with 13 league goals this season.
