Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Murray Joins on Loan

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/10/2000

27-year-old Scottish defensive-midfielder Neil Murray is to join the Mariners on a two month loan from the German club FSV Mainz. Murray, who formerly played for Glasgow Rangers, FC Sion, FC Lorient, and Dundee United joins David Nielsen at the club as a foreign loan player.

Despite the player being Scottish, the loan rules quotas mean that Lawrence get obtain Murray, who is registered with a German club, in addition to the maximum number of loan players that the Grimsby manager is allowed to source from English football clubs (such as Stuart Campbell from Leicester City).

Murray has been waiting for permission from the German FA to participate in a trial at Blundell Park, and has been unable to play in three reserve games to date due to the German authorities dragging their heels. The Scot got the nod from the Germans in time for Wednesday's reserve game against Lincoln City but was unable to play in the match due to injury.

Lennie Lawrence today said that Murray had "a serious chance" of being offered a contract at the end the two months depending on the contribution of the player during the loan period. Murray will be available to play early next month after he has worked on his fitness.
