Mark Hughes Snubs Coyne - Again!

By: Jostein Jensen
Date: 15/08/2001

WELSH BOSS Mark Hughes has once again left the name of Danny Coyne out of his squad for the World Cup Qualifier match against Norway on 5th September despite's Coyne outstanding form once again last weekend at home to Crewe.

It would appear that the club name 'Grimsby' is not good enough for the former Manchester United striker, despite the at times superhuman efforts of the former Tranmere shot stopper, who more than any other individual is responsible for the Mariners participation in First Division football once again this season.

Regulars watchers of the Mariners must be baffled at Hughes' reluctance to pick Danny Coyne, who at best ranks fifth in the Welsh manager's plans, despite such obvious heroics when wearing the black and white shirt of Grimsby Town.

In the past Hughes has explained his failure to select the Mariner's player of the year on the fact that Grimsby have been involved in a competitive fixture, but on this occasion that midweek slot has been left free for player's international commitments.

This summer Danny Coyne signed a two year extenstion to his contract with Grimsby, commiting himself to the Mariners for the next three seasons.

There were a total of four 'keepers in the squad: Paul Jones (Southampton), Roger Freestone (Swansea), Darren Ward (Notts Forest) and Mark Crossley (Middlesbrough).

Also in the squad are: Mark Delaney (Aston Villa), Steve Jenkins (Huddersfield), Rob Edwards (Preston), Andy Melville (Fulham), Kit Symons (Fulham), Robert Page (Watford), Darren Barnard (Barnsley), John Robinson (Charlton), Mark Pembridge (Everton), Simon Davies (Tottenham), Carl Robinson (Wolverhampton), Matthew Jones (Leicester), Robbie Savage (Leicester), Jason Koumas (Tranmere), Gary Speed (Newcastle), Craig Bellamy (Newcastle), Iwan Roberts (Norwich), Ryan Giggs (Manchester United), Gareth Taylor (Burnley), John Hartson (Celtic), Nathan Blake (Blackburn).
