It was the heaviest defeat under Lennie Lawrence's reign but the fact that his team have picked up 14 points from 8 games means they remain at the right end of the table.Report

The Results

Birmingham 2-3 Burnley
Coventry 4-3 Man City
Crewe 0-4 Wimbledon
Crystal Palace 5-0 Grimsby
Gillingham 2-3 Wolves
Millwall 3-1 Barnsley
Norwich 3-1 Watford
Stockport 1-2 Sheff Utd
Walsall 0-0 Portsmouth
West Brom 2-0 Preston

The Table

After Burnley's success at Birmingham, the Claret and Blues have extended their lead at the top of the table. Seven wins out of their first eight matches proves it's not a fluke start for Stan Ternant's men. Another win for West Brom means they climb a few more places up the league ladder, as do Coventry after their second successive win - this time over Man City. Wolves' win at Gillingham means that they remain unbeaten and cement their position in the top four.

Norwich won once more, as did Millwall who have pulled themselves up to mid-table respectability. At the other end Stockport were beaten again, and to add insult to injury it was Sheff Utd's first win of the season. Barnsley failed once more away from home, as did Preston, with both teams staying in the lower reaches of the division. Walsall were locked in a stalemate with Portsmouth which means the Saddlers stay close to the relegation spots. Crewe suffered a 4-0 home defeat to Wimbledon which means the Railwaymen have slid down the table to fourth from bottom.

Division's Talent

Wolves' new signing Nathan Blake (left) is one to watch out for as he begins his assault on the first division's defences. After scoring on his debut he is set to terrorise many back lines.

Sheff Utd's Paul Devlin (right) has also shown some good recent form for the Blades and was at the heart of many attacks in the cup game at Blundell Park. The right winger also contributes with many goals each season.

Ian Moore, Burnley's striker signed from Stockport last season, has begun the season in great form. His side lead the way in the First Division and his team have now scored a total of 23 goals already this season.

Goalscorers

Man City hold the key to a successful strike force as they have in their possession the two top strikers in the division. Both Paulo Wanchope and Shaun Goater (left) have together accumulated 15 goals already, Goater has nine goals to his credit this season.

West Brom's impressive Scott Dobie (right) scored another brace for the Baggies in their win over Preston. The former Carlisle striker now has 5 goals for his new club this season.

Despite being on the losing side, highly-rated Birmingham striker Andy Johnson was another player to score a brace on Tuesday night in their defeat to Burnley. The striker, whose penalty miss in last season's Worthington Cup final, scored against the Mariners last season.

Town's Next Opponents

On Saturday the Mariners travel to Edgeley Park where they face Stockport County. The Cheshire side have yet to win this season but have recently picked up valuable points at Barnsley and, more impressively, Wolves. However, they are yet to gain a point at home but are just about due a win - and after Grimsby's heavy midweek defeat, the home side will fancy their chances at picking up all three points for the first time this season.

Despite being bottom of the pile, Stockport do possess some quality in their team. Finnish midfielder Kuqi has shown good form this season, and was the scorer the last time Stockport played Grimsby at home in a 1-1 draw. Last season the two teams drew 1-1 home and away with Town coming from behind on each occasion. Town have had limited success over County in the past few seasons so the trip to Edgeley Park could prove very tricky.

Path for Grimsby

Out-of-form Gillingham visit Blundell Park in midweek. After their opening day 5-0 defeat of Preston, the Gills have failed to keep up their good form and are currently without a win in four matches. Grimsby then travel to Bradford a week on Saturday and then it's back to Blundell Park on the following Friday for the game against Rotherham. The next Tuesday sees the Mariners make the trip to the west coast to play Liverpool in the third round of the Worthington Cup. Following that is a trip to Bramall Lane where Grimsby take on the team they defeated in the Cup to earn their trip to Anfield - Sheff Utd.
