Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Sunday's Division One Round-Up: Week 7

By: Richard Lord
Date: 23/09/2001

IN THE WAKE of Grimsby's 3-3 draw with Stockport, it leaves the Mariners in 6th position after collecting 15 points from their 9 opening league games.

Home > 2001-2002 Season > League Round-Ups > Week 7

Despite trailing three times at the basement club, the Mariners clawed it back on each occasion to earn the point they deserved. Report

The Results

Coventry 2-0 Portsmouth
Crewe 1-0 Watford
Crystal Palace 1-0 Barnsley
Gillingham 2-1 Rotherham
Millwall 2-0 Sheff Utd
Norwich 2-1 Burnley
Sheff Wed 2-6 Man City
Stockport 3-3 Grimsby
Walsall 0-3 Wolves
West Brom 0-1 Wimbledon

The Table

Burnley's 5-point lead at the top of the table is now just two after their away defeat to Norwich. The Canaries remain unbeaten since the first day of the season, and have a game in hand over the Claret and Blues.

Man City move up into 4th spot after their convincing win over Sheff Wed at Hillsborough. City's away games prove very eventful, having scored 13 goals but conceded 14 in just 5 away matches. Yesterday's victory consisted of eight.

Portsmouth and Grimsby sit in 5th and 6th position respectively, and just behind them on 14 points are Bradford who also have a game in hand. Since beginning the season so poorly, West Brom have now moved up to 8th but lost yesterday at home to Wimbledon. The Dons won 4-0 at Crewe in midweek and are showing some inspiring away form.

Millwall's victory over struggling Sheff Utd puts them on 12 points along with Birmingham, and Gillingham move to 15th after taking three points at home to winless Rotherham. Gianluca Vialli's (left) Watford are failing to set the division alight and their misery was complete after the 1-0 loss to Crewe. That means Crewe sit just below Watford in the table. Another defeat for Barnsley means they only have yet to gain a point away from home whereas Sheff Wed are looking for their first victory at Hillsborough.

Walsall, Stockport and Rotherham occupy the bottom three places; with the bottom two teams still searching for the elusive first win of the season.

Division's Talent

Norwich's forward Paul McVeigh (left) has helped contribute to a 100% home record for the Canaries. Signed from Tottenham on a free, the Northern Ireland player partners Iwan Roberts up front. Together the pair have been effective and McVeigh played a big hand in the two goals scored against Burnley yesterday.

Matt Carbon, (right) signed by Walsall in pre-season, has started the season well at the Midlands club. The former England Under 21 international left West Brom on a free to join up with the Saddlers and has proved to be a very astute buy. Still only 26-years old he's an experienced campaigner, which will come in handy for a team tipped for relegation.

Gareth Williams (left) of Nottm Forest has shown some excellent form recently, most noticeably in the game at Blundell Park just over a week ago. The Welshman is part of a growing list of up-and-coming youngsters at the club and is surely destined for bigger and better things. He has shown the necessary battling and quality skills to fill the midfield role at the club.

Goalscorers

Hardly a week passes by when Shaun Goater (left) doesn't get a mention. A brace yesterday takes his tally for the season up to 11, roughly scoring a goal a game. Again his strike partner Paulo Wanchope assisted well, grabbing a couple of goals himself in the rout at Sheff Wed. Stockport's £10,000 signing from non-league Radcliffe Borough Neil Hardy scored a brace on his full debut for County against Grimsby.

Stockport have come under criticism lately for not having the necessary fire-power in their team to drag them to safety, but in Neil Hardy they may have found the answer. Finally Iwan Roberts (left) was on the mark again for in-form Norwich. The Canaries have won 5 out of their last 6 and the big Welshman has played a big part in their upturn of form.

Town's Next Opponents

Tuesday night sees the visit of Gillingham to Blundell Park. The Gills started the season with a 5-0 win over last year's play-off final losers Preston, and continued that form with a 3-0 home win over Barnsley. But defeats to West Brom, Portsmouth, Bradford and Wolves meant that the Kent club were toppled off the top of the table and they currently lie in 15th place.

Gillingham will enter the match on winning form after seeing off the challenge of Rotherham 2-1. However, they still await their first away victory of the season. Grimsby are currently unbeaten at home in 6 matches but football's a "funny old game".

Path for Grimsby

Following the midweek match against Gillingham is a trip to Yorkshire to face Bradford. The next Friday sees Yorkshire come to Grimsby in the shape of Rotherham. The Worthington Cup third round match at Liverpool is on Tuesday 9 October, with another trip to Yorkshire on the Saturday to face Sheff Utd. Then the Mariners are given a whole week's rest before they play Watford at home. Full Fixture List.
