Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

The Ray Lucas Column: Thanks GTFC

THREE weeks ago, an experience happened to me that has changed my life. I'm a Media Student, and I was given the opportunity to go to Blundell Park and gain some interview experience.

After much chasing, I finally got hold of Mr Tim Harvey and made the short journey to Blundell Park on a cold Monday morning. I was met by John Kirk and I was struck dumb because I regularly read his column in the matchday programme. After a short while waiting, I got to see some of the stars arriving at training. Anxiously looking about, I couldn't see the player I was looking for, until I heard an unmistakably Scouse accent.

My first victim was to be Phil Jevons. The questions I asked were routine. Which club did you support as a kid, who was the first manager you played under? But the biggest surprise was that I sounded so natural. My prize at the end? A cherished Phil Jevons signature for my autograph book.

Now in my stride, I asked If I could interview a second player. My request was granted. To my delight it turned out to be Danny Coyne. I must say at this time that both of the players were very professional. Danny remembered that I was in the crowd at Anfield. He also remembered shaking my hand before kick-off.

And I remarked that he is one of the finest keepers in Division One. Again, the questions came easily. At the end of the interview, during which Danny gave his thoughts on his former boss at Tranmere John King, I managed to secure his signature. Imagine my surprise when Danny said what a great interview it had been. He was equally surprise when I said today were my first attempts. That meant a lot to me

Now with the experience, I'm eagerly looking forward to my interview with former Town player Dave Boylen. This has been tentatively arranged for the New Year.
