Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Reserves Bow Out

By: Martin Copass
Date: 20/04/2002

GRIMSBY Town reserves poor finish to the season saw them slump to fourth spot in the final Division One table. Near neighbours Scunthorpe were also pipped to the runners-up spot by Bury who played three games in the space of a week and gained enough points to overtake them.

Although it is realised that the reserve team is mainly for helping injured players return to fitness and also to prepare the younger players for First Team action, it would have meant a better class of opposition to play against next campaign had they stepped up a division.

The new opposition for Town next season will be, Port Vale and Wrexham (who were relegated from the Premiership), and Macclesfield and Hull (who are promoted from Division Two). Whether Lincoln and Bury will still be in the league is dependant on whether they are still in business next season.

The leagues are sometimes restructured depending on whether clubs drop their reserve teams or not, so the exact line-up for next season may not be known for some time yet.
