Is football a business or a sport?

Paul Groves Has Been Given Cash To Spend!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 29/05/2002

PAUL Groves has been given the all-clear to offer new deals to the players he wants to keep with Danny Butterfield, Terry Cooke, Bradley Allen, Wayne Burnett and Ben Chapman all likely to be made an offer.

But the players will be in for a shock with the new terms on offer, says the Grimsby Telegraph, with a vast reduction to what they were earning before the collapse of ITV Digital.

"Our reforms and restructuring help develop a war chest for Paul Groves to bring in, and keep, players," said chairman Peter Furneaux.

"If we can get the right agreement with players he wants to keep then he can sign them."

Player of the Year Danny Coyne will not be sold just to keep the club afloat. "We do not have to sell anybody to balance the books. The whole idea of this is to keep the core of the squad together. Being practical, it's the same situation as always at Grimsby Town. If someone comes in with an offer that's too good to turn down, we'll look at it. But it's always like that at a small club."

"We have got 14 players and that's a good core of a team. Obviously we need more but there's quite a few first division players already here."

Groves will not have cash to spend in the transfer market but has cash in the kitty for the summer sales start at the end of July when up to a 1,000 players will be available on Bosmans.

"I don't want to start picking players and saying who will get an offer and who won't. That's not my job. But Paul has got a budget and he has to work within it and get serious value for money.
