Dundee Sack Bonetti!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 02/07/2002

FORMER Grimsby Town winger Ivano Bonetti has been sacked as Dundee manager, coincidentally at the same time as major doubt surrounds Paul Groves' future following the Town boss' concerns at the lack of playing resources he would have at his disposal.

The former Juventus midfielder, a hero at Blundell Park before an infamous dressing room bust-up at Luton with then manager Brian Laws in 1996, has been linked with a return to Grimsby on several occasions in the past, either in a playing or managerial capacity, or in 1997 even in a bid to buy outright the club!

Earlier this summer Bonetti was reported to have removed all the belongings from his Tayside home and office, amid speculation that he was on his way back to Italy.

In 1995 Bonetti paid half of his own transfer fee to come to Blundell Park from Torino, with the remainder being donated by adoring fans desperate for the Italian to continue his love affair with the people of Grimsby.

The story was to all end in tears following the dressing room bust-up with Laws, before the Italian arrived at Dundee as player manager in the summer of 2000 to quash rumours of an imminent return to Blundell Park.
