Coyne To Be Given Away For Free?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 15/07/2002

THE Grimsby Telegraph report today that Danny Coyne could go to Lennie Lawrence's Cardiff - for No Fee! They claim that the Town board do want a fee for Coyne, but the only way to offload the Welshman may be to give him away.

Lennie does not want to pay a penny for him and holds all the aces because of the Mariners' financial woe. Coyne is unlikely to turn his nose up at a chance to link up with Lawrence whose side are the red-hot favourites for the second division championship this season. As well as doubling his wages, a move to Ninian Park would virtually cement Coyne's place in the Wales squad.

"Talks are at an early stage and are ongoing, said Lawrence All I can say is Grimsby Town put him on the transfer list. A year ago he would have been worth a lot of money, but not in today's market.

"He is the biggest wage earner at Grimsby for certain and they need to trim their wage bill. I have Neil Alexander as number one and other people here will start the season as his understudy.

"But if Danny Coyne comes in there will be two number one keepers. Neil Alexander did well enough at the end of last season to start and if Danny comes it will still be on that basis.

"But he would give Neil Alexander serious competition because he's an exceptional keeper and would help the squad overall.

Town boss Paul Groves will be far from happy if Coyne is allowed to leave for nothing. "I've spoken to Lennie, but there is nothing imminent."
