NTL Miss Friday Deadline

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/07/2002

STRUGGLING Telecom giants NTL have failed to meet Friday's deadline to pay the Nationwide clubs fees owed for the Internet rights to their official web sites.

Town were due a much-needed cheque in the post for £85,000, but they now have to wait until next month, or perhaps write the money off.

Mariners accounts manager Steve Wraith told the Grimsby Telegraph: "We just hope that this doesn't turn out to be another ITV Digital. We've already budgeted for this money and now we aren't going to get it until August - or maybe not at all."

"The Football League have asked clubs to either re-negotiate a new deal, or do what they are doing with ITV Digital and take them to court. We are hoping that clubs will re-negotiate so that we get some money."

With the reduction of income as a result of the collapse of ITV Digital television rights, Town have had to make drastic cuts just to be able to stay in business, and the timing of NTL's financial restructuring could not be worse for the Mariners.

The £85,000 was due from NTL subsidiary Premium TV as a payment for the last six month's of running the club's official web sites.
