Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Kabba Dabba Dooo!

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 23/08/2002

GRIMSBY Town have boosted their front line by adding Stephen Kabba to the squad for three months. It was seeming unlikely that Crystal Palace would release him, but after a change of heart by Trevor Francis he is coming to Blundell Park.

Stephen (left) finally signed at lunchtime today. Having played in all three of Palace's games already and scoring against Preston, he will be involved in the game against Bradford tomorrow. He started out as a trainee for Crystal Palace four years ago and has had spells on loan with Southend and Luton.

He is joining yesterday's signing Jamie Pollock who has just been paid off by his previous club Crystal Palace, enabling him to sign for the Mariners, but Pollock will not be included in the squad for tomorrow's game at Bradford, due to missing most of the pre season with a shin injury.

Jamie is going to play for FREE so he can earn him self a full-time contract. He hasn't played in any First team since a four-week spell at premiership new boys Birmingham City, and never played for Palace last season.

Paul Groves has admitted to the GET that bringing in Pollock is a gamble but with the lack of funds he's having to look in the "bargain basement" to fill up the spare places in Town's depleted squad. "He hasn't played first team football for a while and we'll have to see how he does. But he's got a good pedigree and has been with good clubs in the past. He's got a bit of drive and has operated at a good level. He can be very competitive in the middle of the park. But he has missed a lot of time.

"It might take him a while to get that back." revealed Groves.

Pollock was born in Stockton on Tees and started his career with Middlesborough, before the then Boro manager Lennie Lawrence sold him to Bolton for £1.5 million. After 2 seasons at Bolton he was sold on to Manchester city for £1 MILLION then finished off at Crystal Palace being sold to them for £3/4 million.
