Oster Not For Sale!!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/03/2003

GRIMSBY Town met with a solid refusal when Sunderland declared that John Oster was NOT for sale after Chairman Peter Furneaux, made an official enquiry for the Wales international last Sunday and his approach was rebuffed by their chairman Bob Murray.

Peter Furneaux recounted the talks to the Grimsby Telegraph telling them; "John Oster is not for sale. I was sat next to the Sunderland chairman Bob Murray at the Worthington Cup Final in Cardiff and asked him several times about the player."

"I made the enquiry, and asked him again, but he made it absolutely plain that the player is not for sale. I think they see him in their plans for the future."

It was understood that Sunderland were open to offers after Oster returned to Blundell Park after failing to impress Howard Wilkinson and it was revealed that Oster could be available for as little as £75,000.

But Furneaux also pointed out that the club may have been able to find £75,000 to buy him, but Oster's personal demands would have put the buffers on any deal.

"The wages would have been very high and something we might not have been able to contemplate." However, the game has not quite ended. Oster's contract runs out in the Summer and no one knows yet what will happen after that.
