Is football a business or a sport?

Are You Getting Your Share? (Of The Club That is!)

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 15/05/2003

GRIMSBY Town Football Club still has shares for sale. The release of the shares was to provide much needed cash to Town, who will need every penny they can get due to the loss of income caused by relegation to the second division.

This is perhaps the best time for fans to gain some equity in the club as the season has finished and the cost of acquiring 100 shares equates to about 3 visits to Blundell Park.

For many years now, fans and supporters have had to pay a high price for obtaining the few shares that came on to the market but with the new share issue, the shares are available at their face value of one pound each.

These are ordinary shares and carry full voting rights, which allows the holder to have some say in the running of the club. But it means more than that. I personally have a small number of shares in the club and I am very proud of the fact that I am part owner (very small part I admit) of the club I support. In fact my share certificate is framed and hangs on my Grimsby Town wall! I believe that owning shares in the club gives you a valid voice in club affairs and is a positive way of assisting the club.

Some time ago I approached a number of shareholders seeking to purchase a few more and it was quite surprising how many shares in the club have been passed down from generation to generation, and these people would not part with them for love nor money.

If you would like to actively support the Mariners, there can be no better way, at the moment, than by buying a few shares in the club. So why not add your name to those who have invested in the club without thought of personal gain but with the sole aim of helping the club.

It will not be long before we supporters will be calling for Groves to sign new players to enable us to gain promotion back to the first division. Like everything else, players cost money and if we believe in what the club is trying to achieve then we have to be prepared to help in any way we can.

Not everyone can afford to spend a hundred pounds and I accept that. But if you can, it would be great to see you investing in Your club.

For those who cannot afford it, we intend to help you. The Fishy will be running the usual competitions plus a few more during the coming season and the winner of the POM will receive 100 shares in GTFC.

Here is the information you will need to apply for shares:

Shares are to be allotted in multiples of £100 with a minimum investment of £100.

The Club would be pleased to consider requests in writing stating the name and address of the proposed shareholder. Payment by Cheque should be made at the time of writing.

Formal allotment of shares will be carried out by the Directors, on a monthly basis, with Share Certificates being dispatched thereafter.

Requests can be by email, but the person applying for the shares will still need to send a cheque before any consideration is given on the allotment of shares. Please state name, address and monetary amount for shares.

Cheques should be made payable to Grimsby Town Football Club Plc.
