Donovan Handed Transfer

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 22/08/2003

BARNSLEY are attempting to off-load former Mariner Kevin Donovan in an attempt to slash their wage bill. The Halifax-born midfielder, who left Blundell Park for Oakwell in the summer of 2001, has made 48 appearances for the Yorkshire club, scoring just once.

Tykes boss Gudjon Thordarson told the club's official web site: "If we are going to bring anyone in then we have to move a player out first. At this moment in time we have not been any closer to doing that but we hope that we can do that later."

"We have been circulating one name around this week. The player knows full well that we are circulating his name and it has been in the pipeline for a couple of weeks. We will have to wait and see what happens with that but the player is Kevin Donovan. He is now in the situation where it is in his best interests and that of the club if he moves on and we are trying to find a club for him.

"Kevin’s salary is quite high compared to the players I would bring in as well so it would be good for the club to find a solution"

Donovan departed to Barnsley on a Bosman two years ago, and has had a miserable time at the club, which was relegated in his first season, and went into administration in his second.

The Tykes also have former Mariners Tony Gallimore and Peter Handyside in their first team squad this season.
