Jevons' Scoring Return

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 17/09/2003

PHIL Jevons marked his return to action in a Grimsby shirt with a goal, as Town reserves soundly beat Sheffield United 3-0 this afternoon at Saltergate.

The other two goals were scored by Carchedi and Ward in a convincing display by Town's second string in a Pontins cup game played at Chesterfield's ground.

After a torrid two weeks for the Mariners faithful Town's victory brings a bit of good news to the club for once. With the former Evertonian on the verge of renegotiating his contract, first team action could be near, possibly even against basement club Chesterfield on Saturday.

With Rowan injured in last night's defeat against Swindon, and Town's inability to find a new striker, the return of Phil Jevons could be a timely new signing from within their own ranks after a summer bust-up with Grimsby chairman Peter Furneaux.

The former Evertonian last played for Grimsby in August 2002, since when he spent most of last season on loan at neighbours Hull City. The summer bust up and a down-payment to Everton as part of his transfer fee from the Toffees have stopped Jevons' first team involvement since his return from the KC Stadium in April, but both of those issues are now close to being resolved.

If Jevons is not available to play on Saturday and Rowan does not recover from his injury then one of youngsters Nimmo or Soames, who were not risked in today's reserve game, would be expected to partner Michael Boulding up front against the Spireites.

Grimsby: Hughes, Edwards, Parker, Wheeler, Young, Hildred, Ward, Newton, Jevons, Huckett, Carchedi. Sub (Unused): Lawsen, Chamberlain, Davey.

Sheff United: Rogers, Wood, Armstrong (Gyaki 78), Harper, Cryan, Robertson (Ashmore 57), Sestanovich, Ross, Parkinson, Sharp (Speight 65), Hurst. Unused: Lindley, Marrison.
