Peterborough 3 Grimsby 2

A late onslaught by Grimsby failed to see them overcome a 3-1 deficit, ending up losing 3-2 to Peterborough and facing yet another early exit from a cup competition. Two well worked goals by Posh, and another with a suggestion of handball contrasted with several missed chances by Town.

Paul Groves made only one forced change to the starting line-up, with Phil Jevons replacing Town's leading scorer Michael Boulding, who took a knock in Friday's training session.

After a bright start by Town, Andy Clarke's 22nd minute striker put Posh's noses in front, although the former Wimbledon striker appeared to control the ball with his hand before hooking it in from a narrow angle. Earlier Town had had a slice of luck when Peterborough hit the post from a volley inside the box.

Within two minutes the Mariners were back on level terms when Phil Jevons' free kick took a deflection and ended up in the back of the net.

Two well-worked goals then turned the match in Peterborough's favour. The first, just after half time, saw Steven Thomson end a fluent move by Boro, drilling in a shot past Aidan Davidson from the edge of the penalty area. Adam Newton scored a similar goal from the other side of the penalty area after 65 minutes.

Paul Groves responded to the two goals by bringing on Marcel Cas and Darren Mansaram, and the Mariners laid siege to the Peterborough goal for the final twenty minutes of the game. Phil Jevons missed a couple of chances, but Marcel Cas finally gave Grimsby a lifeline when he bundled the ball in the net from close range to make the score 3-2 with just six minutes to go. Town's agony was compounded in the final minute when a Phil Jevons effort flashed agonisingly wide of the post.

As with the majority of Town's defeats this season, in an extremely close division, there wasn't a great deal to chose between the teams, other than Peterborough took the majority of their chances and Town missed several of their own. Grimsby have a quick opportunity to gain revenge when they travel to London Road for the corresponding league game on December 28th.
