The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

The Football Foundation Sells Us Out!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 23/12/2003

GRIMSBY Town Football Club and the other teams that were in the first division last season have been sold down the river by the Football Foundation who have reneged on their promise to loan them £330,000 each to offset the financial mess caused by the collapse of ITV Digital.

Chairman Peter Furneaux told the Grimsby Telegraph that he received the news today after being promised just 10 days ago that the cheque was in the post.

The Football Foundation state that the change of heart came after legal advice and the worry that the cash would not be repaid.

"All the first division clubs, including ourselves, were promised this money a year ago." Said Furneaux. We were told, in a letter dated December 15, that the money was going to be with us before Christmas."

"Everyone has been told it was coming and all of the clubs have put it in their cash flow. Then we get a new letter and, whenever you ring the Football League to try and ask why, everyone is on holiday for Christmas."

"The Grimsby Town board are attempting to resolve the situation and it is not the end of the matter. People at clubs all over the country will be jumping and down about this."END

Billo says: We should not really be surprised by this move. Almost everything the Football League and the FA have a hand in, ends in a shambles.

The ITV Digital mess would never have happened if someone had read the contract properly. But what else can you expect? You have to remember that football today is controlled by representatives of clubs, some of which are millions in the red.

It is a bit like putting the cat in charge of the pigeons.

Somehow, whenever the Football League and the FA are mentioned, piss ups and breweries spring to mind!
