Barnsley Preview

AFTER the Mariner's dramatic last gasp winner on Tuesday night, they welcome Barnsley to Blundell Park with some familiar faces re-visiting Cleethorpes for this fixture…

Saturday could see the biggest gate at Blundell Park this season, with 2,000 Barnsley fans expected in what is bound to be a passionate affair. Peter Handyside and Michael Boulding re-visit Blundell Park whilst Mariners striker Isiah Rankin is on loan from Barnsley. Ex-Mariner defender Tony Gallimore is likely to miss out through injury.

The Opposition

Manager
Gudjon Thordarson. Former Stoke City manager who was at the Helm at the Brittania Stadiumn from 1999 until 2002. He guided them to promotion in 2002, but was sacked just five days later when his relationship with his fellow Icelandic chairman had become "untenable". Spent about a year out of the game until his appointment as Barnsley manager this summer. One of his first moves was to bring in his former captain at Stoke City, Peter Handyside and since then has built a squad that look set to be challenging for a play off place in the second division.

The Team
Despite all the Yorkshire side's financial problems in the last year, since new chairman Peter Risdale has come in, manager Gudjon Thordarson has been able to accumulate a squad of decent players. In between the sticks for the Tykes is the experienced Marlon Beresford who signed for the club just a month or so ago. In the centre of defence they have Peter Handyside (left), who needs no introduction to the Town fans and Garry Monk who just signed permanently for the club this week after spending three months with the Oakwell club on loan from Southampton.

Former Fulham player Kevin Betsy provided pace and energy on the right hand side of midfield whilst Craig Rocastle is one of a string of loan players on loan for the club. One is Arron Davies who is on loan from Southampton and Manchester United youngster Daniel Nardiello who has scored three goals in five appearances in his brief time with the Tykes. Former Notts County and Bradford forward Mark Stallard has also impressed in his short period in Yorkshire, but Michael Boulding is still yet to find the net for our visitors which could make up for an interesting match!

  • The main question mark for The Mariners for this weekends game is who will be in goal. Aidan Davison starts a three game suspension, which means that Andrew Pettinger will make his first ever league appearance between the sticks. However, caretaker boss Graham Rodger is trying to bring in a goalkeeper on loan, but it remains to be seen whether this will happen in time.

  • Defender Mike Edwards returns from suspension but will probably only make the bench, with Rodger expected to keep faith with the back four that played on Tuesday night.

  • Lee Thorpe will be pushing for a recall after making an impact as a substitute on Tuesday night.

  • Phil Jevons is an almost certain starter after his brace on Tuesday evening. He is likely to replace Iain Anderson who has a slight groin injury, though he could make the bench. One man who will not be in the squad is Iffy Onoura, who looks set to move to Tranmere, which could pave the way for a permanent deal for Isiah Rankin and/or Lee Thorpe.

  • Former Huddersfield and Ajax midfielder Dean Gorre looks set to miss out after aggravating his knee in last week’s match with Wycombe Wanderers.

  • Fellow midfield player Jacob Burns and Chris Lumsdon are both a few weeks from full fitness and will play no part. Lee Crooks has a thigh injury and will also miss out, as will a certain Tony Gallimore who has been out since before the New Year, though he is expected to return to the Tykes squad soon.

    Connections

  • There are countless Barnsley - Grimsby connections from down the recent years. The most obvious ones are Darren Barnard, Michael Boulding, Peter Handyside and Tony Gallimore who have all now played for both clubs.
  • Perhaps one of the most famous to play for both Town and The Tykes is Paul Futcher who spent six years with the Reds and four with the Mariners, until he was 39 years old. A true Town legend!
  • Similary, Jim Dobbin (left) and Kevin Donovan have had spells with both sides, Donovan with much more success with Grimsby where he scored 20 goals in the famous 1997/98 season to help Town to promotion from the second division.

    • Last Time Out

    The Mariners carved out a 0-0 draw with Barnsley back last October, in a game of few chances or incidents, except that last minute penalty from Mr Gallimore, perhaps one of the highlights of this season for many Mariners fans!
