Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Fenty's Doomsday Book

By: Bill Osborne

THERE have been some comments regarding the book of conditions issued to the players at Blundell Park and questions of why it was necessary.

My opinion for, what it is worth, is that in today's football, it is necessary for everyone to know exactly where they stand. The book is designed to make sure that at Grimsby Town everyone knows what is expected of them. No excuses!

It also clearly demonstrates, in my opinion, that Fenty means business. He has not told any lies or made false promises. He has said things are still difficult but they are looking for success.

Russell Slade has also laid it on the line. Players will want to wear the shirt or go! He has also intimated that success is the aim, come what may.

I cannot believe that Slade will accept anything short of commitment and I cannot believe that Fenty will accept anything less than success from him. He will be remembering the last couple of seasons where procrastination played a great part in where we are today.

The board must have recognised the futility in waiting until the last minute to find a saviour to save us when relegation is inevitable. We must never get into that position again.

I think Russell Slade must be aware of that and he will be determined to make sure he is not a man in a hot seat. Woe betide any player who lets him down!

There are good signals coming from BP. It is time for change and I think we will see those changes this season.

One thing is for sure. If I lived anywhere near the UK, I would be clamouring for my season ticket. This will be one of the most interesting seasons we have seen for a long time and I cannot believe that any Town fan would want to miss it!
