TOWN finally broke their 18-match run without an away win at Cambridge, with veteran defender John McDermott also scoring his first league goal for 7 years. After a scrappy game with few chances for either side, Town broke the deadlock after the break to secure a deserved victory.

Thomas Pinault was dropped to the bench, after the mercurial Frenchman was deemed not fit enough to start the game after struggling all week with a groin injury. In his place came Town stalwart Stacy Coldicott to add more bite to the midfield, at the expense of Pinault's guile.

All of the action of the first half was in the first ten minutes, when Cambridge had their two best chances of the game. After just five minutes, Tann hit a shot from a corner narrowly past the post. Daniel Chillingworth then missed an even easier chance, hitting his shot wide from a good cross just three minutes later.

The action then switched to the other end when a Jason Crowe header went just over and a shot by Andy Parkinson was blocked just as he was about to pull the trigger.

The remainder of the first half was a disappointment, with Town having most of the possession, but failing to create many clear-cut chances.

The game appeared to be heading nowhere when suddenly Andy Parkinson broke the deadlock on 65 minutes. A Jason Crowe header landed at the Scouse striker's feet, who launched the ball goalwards. As time stood still, the ball looped around the 'keeper and curled just inside the 'keeper's far post, to the joy of the 500-strong away contingent.

The goal boosted Town's confidence, who from then on were in total control of the game.

Within eight minutes a Town break found Michael Reddy in a shooting position, but he elected to pass to the unmarked John McDermott to his left. Macca curled the ball in past the stranded Cambridge 'keeper, and promptly hurled himself into the ecstatic away fans.

The win, which was long overdue from their away performances this season, moves Grimsby up into the top half of the table.
