SOUTHEND had to settle for a 1-1 draw against the Mariners who were in control for the first half but allowed the Shrimpers to get back into the game in the second half.

Southend were looking for 3 points having five successive league victories under their belt but Town made sure they had to fight for their point.

Wayne Gray passed back to his keeper but it was deflected off one of his own players for McDermott to find the net from 15 yards with a low shot.

Southend, in the second half, came back on top and finally Duncan Jupp knocked a long ball forward, which the Grimsby defence (Jones?) failed to deal with, and Eastwood drove the ball home from 20 yards.

Both sides struggled to get the extra points with Adam Barrett's header just wide. Jason Crowe's header struck the bar and in the last few seconds, Andy Parkinson's shot was deflected wide of the goal by Southend defender Barrett.

The game could have gone either way so a point each was a fair result.
