Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Grimsby 1 Shrewsbury 1

THE Mariners put in a decent performance but only came away with a point in a "must win" game against Shrewsbury this afternoon.

Home > 2005-2006 Season > Reports > Shrewsbury (h)

On a bright afternoon with a decent crown of just under 6000, Town kicked off and straight away set about Shrewsbury. In the early stages there was good link up play between Goodfellow and Newey on the left hand side.

The first decent chance fell to the Mariners when a through ball on the right ended up with a race between Reddy and the Shrews' 'keeper. Reddy was first to the ball and took it wide with the 'keeper deciding to try and chase Reddy instead of getting back to his area. Reddy managed to turn and instead of crossing it early with no 'keeper he decided to square it to Parkinson who hit a slow and tame shot at the Shrewsbury goal. By this time the Shrews' keeper had returned back to his goal.

Town continued to dominate the first half and there was good football being played by the Mariners, however too many crosses being sent in were being claimed by the impressive Shrew’s keeper with no Town player attacking the ball.

A good ball-wining tackle by Goodfellow in the Shrewsbury half sent Goodfellow away down the left and his squared pass found Paul Bolland on the run but his shot flew just wide.

Then against the run of play Shrewsbury scored, a long punt up field by Shrewsbury saw Mildenhall half scramble the ball over his own bar when surely the 'keeper should have caught it as he had nobody within a mile of him. The resulting corner saw Gary Jones lose Burton, the player he was marking, who unchallenged headed the ball downwards and into the Town net.

From then onwards Shrewsbury used whatever chance they could to waste time till half time.

As soon as the second half kicked off Newey, who just before half time had got injured, could not carry on, and was taken off with Gary Croft coming on to replace him.

Town still, as in the first half, had most of the play but found the Shrews' keeper Hart in decent form. A powerful Gary Jones half volley was well kept out, until the breakthrough came at last.

A Shrews' player was adjudged to have handballed the ball in his area. The ref pointed straight to the spot and Goodfellow slammed the ball home into the top corner.

Just as Town fans had stopped celebrating then Mildenhall had to be alert to save a one-on-one to keep the score at 1-1.

Town still continued to push and took Parkinson off for Mendes who did well when he came on.

Both Macca and Goodfellow had wayward long range shots before Rob Jones had what looked liked a perfectly good goal ruled out.

Mendes had a late header saved well in the dying minutes, but overall a gutsy performance with disappointing final balls and finishing costing Town the game.

MOM: Paul Bolland, never gave in for a second.
