Beat the Summer Bookies: Week Two

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/06/2006

LAST week's bets were unsuccessful with the quest to pick outsiders and upsets missing those that happened. But there are many more out there to be found so it is no time to be despondent!

Home > 2005-2006 Season > Beat the Summer Bookies > Week 2

The ultimate outsider bet of all is that a new nation will win the World Cup. Only a small handful of countries have ever won the trophy, excluding Spain, Portugal and Holland. But the gap between the top few countries and the rest is ever narrowing, making a new winner fairly likely in the next few years. The odds on a new nation lifting the trophy in 2006 are around 3.85 on Betfair. That is this week's first recommended bet.

Of the early games, the Germans looked poor but got away with it largely because they were playing Costa Rica who were even worse. The Germans are now long odds on to win Group A (around 1.3 on Betfair), but with Poland and Ecuador still to play that's no formality. You'd expect both of them to pick up three points against Costa Rica so there's a lot still to play for. This week's second recommended bet is to lay Germany to win Group A at 1.3. Alternatively back the Poles to beat their neighbours, which you can get for around 8.0 on Betfair.

Of the remaining games in which we are yet to see each nation for the first time, Ukraine look capable of the great underachievers of the World Cup, Spain. The Eastern Europeans could be the dark horses of this tournament, and are available at around 5.1 to defeat the Spanish. That is this week's third recommended bet.
