A Day At The Galpharm Part 2

Taylor replaced the ineffective Till and immediately got involved in the action. North then got wide and crossed but there was no-one there. The story continued of moves going wrong. On 49, North got injured helping out at the back.

On 50, Huddersfield won a free-kick 30 yards out. The ball was headed out for a corner. From the corner, the ball bounced around and came in from the right to the left post where Jevons blasted in from close range. Huddersfield 1, Grimsby 0. This spurred Huddersfield on to more pressure. On 55, Newey was booked when trying to keep up with another lightening Huddersfield attack. Grimsby were struggling at this point. Nothing was happening in midfield, where Huddersfield were winning the ball routinely.

On 60, a move was stopped by Holdsworth, who skilfully worked clear of three Grimsby players. The ball landed at the feet of Kamara, who once again beat Newey hands down and passed across the goal to Jevons, who slotted the ball in easily to make it Huddersfield 2, Grimsby 0. Grimsby had a good chance on 63 when Taylor broke clear and crossed for North, whose goal-bound header was desperately cleared off the line by the Huddersfield goalkeeper Glennon. A double change was then made when North and Bennett were replaced by Bolland and Bore. Bolland almost got through on 67 but was closed out by two defenders.

Jevons was denied by Hird after receiving a pass on 69, thus preventing his hat-trick, and then returned the compliment by passing to Kamara whose effort was just over. Jevons was then substituted to the jeers and relief of the Grimsby contingent. On 75, Kamara forced yet another great save from Montgomery. Grimsby were woeful. They had lost heart and couldn’t pass. There was no purpose to their play. The wheels had come off. Huddersfield were running the show.

On 77, Toner had a chance to shoot but instead crossed to Bore who headed weakly towards the goalkeeper. The deterioration of the performance was summed up on 84 when Bolland ran to the sideline, realised he had no support, put his arms out in despair and pushed the ball into touch. It was pathetic and unprofessional. A minute later, Huddersfield attacked again. Cadamarteri’s shot rebounded off the post and Beckett was first to follow up, sliding it home to make the score Huddersfield 3, Grimsby 0. Many of the Grimsby fans left, hugely disappointed at such a listless display. On the pitch, the team seemed to have lost interest as Bolland found touch again. With Grimsby having all lost all hope and semblance of skill, and Huddersfield realising that they had no need to press on, at the final whistle the score remained at Huddersfield 3, Grimsby 0.

Final verdict. Whilst the first half was acceptable from Grimsby’s point of view, the second half was atrocious. There was no Grimsby midfield to speak of, and Huddersfield won every ball there was to win. There was no spirit in the performance. Huddersfield showed their divisional superiority and are a very decent side, but it did not help when Grimsby’s heads went down after Huddersfield’s first goal. As far as Grimsby’s Man of the Match was concerned, in the first half Atkinson, Fenton and Toner put in fighting performances, but the only Grimsby player who performed with distinction throughout was the excellent Montgomery in goal. He made some fine saves and once again looked authoritative throughout. The only other achievement was that ex Town player Jevons did not get Man of the Match for Huddersfield, courtesy of some Town fans texting in their votes for the Huddersfield goalkeeper. Fortunately in the scheme of things, it was a cup game and we weren’t expected to beat a team in a higher division, and next Tuesday’s league fixture again Darlington is far more important.

"We’ll have ‘em in the second leg", commented a supporter as we trooped out of the Galpharm stadium .... oh, there isn’t one. Oh, well. At least we had a day out.
