Cooper Staying?
Cooper Staying?

Darlo Say No!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/03/2011

DARLINGTON have rejected the Mariners' approach for their manager Mark Cooper, but Town are believed to have interviewed him anyway and are looking to appoint both Cooper and his assistant Richard Dryden. As the Quakers have rejected Town's move then they would be entitled to compensation.

Cooper is out of contract at the end of the season so the amount of compensation due to the Quakers may not be much, but it still could be a significant sum.

Fans at Darlington are said to be reluctant to see Cooper go. However the fact that his contract is at an end and the uncertainty over the Darlington Arena means Cooper may be tempted to move South to Blundell Park.

Cooper told the Northern Echo last night, "I want to stay but my contract is up in the summer and that's where we're at."

Town wanted to install Cooper as manager today, but may have to decide whether to pay compensation, go for someone else, or wait until the summer when Cooper will become a free agent.

  • Town director John Elsom has become the third member of the board in recent days to issue a statement following the resignation of former Vice Chairman Mike Parker.

Parker resigned because he felt that the three members of the board who did not contribute much financially to the club had too large a say in board decisions.

Elsom appeared to agree with this saying in his statement: "I have stated previously, and I did so again at Monday's meeting, that the Board should endeavour to examine a basis for Board reconstruction to reflect the reality that decisions should be made by the two main funding directors with the remaining directors acting as advising or associate colleagues."

Elsom also pointed out that he had lent the club £50K and was currently looking towards lending a further £25K.

Grim Rob Says: The board's disagreements has come at a bad time when we are hoping to attract a new manager to a club which has a sound financial footing. The reality is it still does have that sound basis to operate in, but the fact there appears to be some sort of power struggle going on may influence who wants to come here. Let's hope the board past and present resolve their differences, especially as most of them seem to agree on the principle that the more you contribute then the more say you have!
